Commissioned Pieces

Commissioning a piece of art can feel like an intimidating process. I try to make sure that is not the case for my clients. Every project starts with a discussion about the size of the piece, colors you like or might want to avoid, aspects or features you like about my work, and any special elements you want included. Fees for commissioned pieces are in line with the prices on this site. Once we agree on the price, terms, and timeline, I’ll start the piece and keep you apprised of its progress as it evolves. Totem Trio Two - I think my totems look best in groups of three. This client wanted to avoid red in each of these pieces which was a color challenge of a different kind!

Totem Trio One

I was challenged on this project to use a color palette that was different for me, and would complement the style of this beautifully furnished home.

Our design challenge was a concave wall that needed just the right piece of art. When we saw Ellen’s other totems, we knew that was the way to go. She listened to our requests and was patient and very easy to work with as we talked through colors and design elements. We were impressed with the way she noted some of the smallest details when she visited our home to understand our style. She was able to incorporate our favorite colors to create three perfect totems for our home.  We will enjoy them for years to come. Thank you, Ellen!

Exploration

A piece displayed in a gallery caught this collector’s eye and he asked me for a companion piece to make the perfect pair.

I saw - and very much liked -  one of these paintings at an exhibition at Art Center Sarasota.  I then thought of a perfect place to hang the painting. The only problem: the space really needed two pieces, not one. So Ellen and I worked collaboratively on a second, companion painting.  Ellen was responsive, fun to work with, and offered creative options. As it turns out, I like the second painting at least a much as the first. Many thanks.

Reflections

Knowing about my affinity for all things rusty, this client asked me to incorporate rusted vintage train reflectors into a painting. I also incorporated fabric, text, and metal, along with different textural elements. The color palette worked perfectly with existing collectibles.

DETAIL: Painted rust rivets match the real thing.

When my wife and I commissioned a large piece from Ellen, I requested that she incorporate three old train reflectors I had found during my travels. After asking us what colors we liked, how big to go and what elements of her work we liked most, she was off and running. A short time later, she presented us with the amazing finished work, which has become a focal point in our living room. We never fail to appreciate its beauty and originality.
